Team Uganda falters at World Half Marathon

KAMPALA.

Many would agree that Moses Kipsiro’s controversial omission from Team Uganda largely affected its performance at the 21st World Half Marathon in Danish capital Copenhagen on Saturday.

For blowing the lid off the allegations for sexual harassment of junior female runners during the Africa Cross-country camp three weeks ago by one of the three male coaches, the results clearly underline the fact that Kipsiro’s experience was greatly missed.

None of five representatives came close to the podium. Geofrey Kusuro was Uganda’s best, taking 11th position after finishing the 21km in a time of 1:00:41.

erharps, Kusuro finished ahead of medal prospects Daniel Rotich and Moses Kibet because they lacked motivation due to the void left by Kipsiro. Prior, the pair had been training together with Kipsiro.

National Half Marathon winner Rotich clocked one hour and 1:56 seconds to take 26th position, three positions ahead of Kibet (1:02:02) while Isaac Ayeko (1:03:56) finished in 58th position.

But the race belonged to Kenyan Geoffrey Kamworor (59:08) who held off Eritrean Samuel Tsegay (59:21) and Ethiopia’s Guye Adola (59:21) for gold. And whereas Linet Chebet settled for the 43rd place in 1:13:28, Kenyan trio of Glady Cherono (1:07:29), Mary Ngugi (1:07:44) and Selly Kaptich (1:07:52) took a podium sweep in the women’s race.
