Strange bean disease hits Moroto

Farmers in Moroto District are frustrated after a strange disease attacked and destroyed beans in several gardens .

The disease which has largely affected Nadunget and Rupa sub-counties causes bean plants to dry up before flowering.

Ms Betty Naput, a farmer, who’s nursing the loss of four hectares of beans to this strange disease, said her expectations of building a permanent house for her and her six children have been thwarted by the disease.

“I was hoping that after harvesting my beans, I would sell them and buy 10 iron sheets and roof my house so that my children would also sleep in a descent house,” Ms Naput said recently.Mr John Teko, also a farmer in Nadunget Sub-county, said he has never seen this strange disease. He called on the agricultural team in the district to help with ways to fight the disease.“We have never experienced this kind of beans disease which kills the bean plant after flowering,” he said.

Mr Peter Jewange, the Moroto District Naads coordinator, confirmed receiving reports of the disease saying he has instructed the agricultural extension workers to study the disease.Mr Jewange suspects the disease could be beans stock bores adding that the right cause of the disease will be established.
