Seven suspects escape from Fort Portal police cells

Kabarole. Seven suspects who were detained last week at Fort Portal central police station cells have escaped.

The Rwenzori sub region police spokesperson Mr Bakari Muga Bashir on Monday said the escapees include two murder suspect while others had been detained on charges of obtaining money by false pretense and theft.

“The suspects escaped from the police cells on Saturday at round 8pm. They took aantage of the dilapidated walls of the police cells where they drilled a hall using a sharp object to find

their way out,” said Mr Bakari.

One of the suspects who remained adamant alerted police but by the time they responded, others had disappeared.

Mr Bakari added that police have launched investigations to establish how they escaped and to have them re-arrested.

He said that the police officers who were on duty at the time of escape have been arrested for possible charges of being negligent on duty.

This is not the first time suspects are escaping from Fort Portal police cells.

Last year, other suspects escaped from custody after finding their way through the ceiling in the women’s wing.

The Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, 1995 as amended, provides that a suspect is not supposed to spend over 48 hours in police custody without being taken to court for trial.
