Ibanda- Education officials in Ibanda District have closed Keihangaara Primary School in Keihangaara Sub-county following reports that more than 250 of their pupils were possessed by demons.
Ibanda District chairman Melichiadis Kazwengye announced the development at the district council meeting on Tuesday.
Keihangara is one of the traditional and renown in Ibanda District.
It is said the pupils turned rowdy on Monday morning and started making funny noises and hurling stones at each other and at teachers.
The pupils allege that a former teacher at the school used to preach the ‘gospel’ to them from secluded places before the school management discovered she was misleading them. And demons are alleged to have been unsettling pupils since that time.
She was transferred to another school at the end of last term.
The Chief Administrative Officer, Ms Alice Rushure, and assistant Inspector of Schools Peter Nsimire rushed to the school and ordered the head teacher and staff to close temporarily until the situation normalises.
Mr Kazwengye warned teachers against involving pupils in their cult activities asking them to observe professionalism.
Parents have accused the teacher of inflicting their children with demons which is likely to cause poor academic performance.
