As the Uganda Premier League (UPL) enters the final bend of fixtures, SC Villa badly needs to collect maximum points at the Lugazi fortress of URA FC, writes ELLY KYEYUNE.
When Villa edged URA 1-0 in the first round game in Mityana, club president Ben Misagga vociferously praised the result as the turning point of the season. A Steven Bengo curler settled the match.
It was also Sam Ssimbwa’s first win for the club after taking over from Steven Bogere. Six months down the road, Misagga is taking this game as a watershed moment in the club’s quest to clinch the league title for the first time since 2004.
“These are the kind of games we have to win to take the league title,” he says. “Not only will the win push us closer to Vipers, we would send a statement to all the remaining teams in our path.”
Misagga is clearly desperate to reverse the poor trend of results that have seen the Jogoos fail to win any of their four games. Ironically, this encounter comes at a time Ibrahim Kirya is looking for his first win as Villa interim coach following the sacking of Ssimbwa a fortnight ago.
Therefore, he will be under pressure to get the title chase on track against a side he served one time as an assistant coach. On the other hand, his counterpart Alex Isabirye is far from confident.
After last weekend’s exit from the Caf Confederation Cup at the hands of South African side Orlando Pirates, Isabirye is starring at the axe given that his side is out of league contention. Matters have not been helped by the fact that they also got dumped out of the Uganda Cup by KCCA FC at the same venue.
If there is one single person that could save Isabirye’s job, it has to be striker Robert Ssentongo, who was absent when the Taxmen got eliminated from the continent.
Ssentongo lies second in the league scoring chart with 10 goals and will be fresh to dent his former side. Peter Lwasa and Oscar Agaba will wait to be passed as fit just hours to the game since they have been training with injuries.
Elsewhere, fast-fading Express FC will entertain Sadolin FC while Bidco FC will host Bright Stars in Jinja.
