Sanlam take early lead in National League

Sanlam Chess Club assumed an early 9.5 points lead in the National chess League after winning their first two matches against Uganda Christian University (UCU) Queens and Lweza Chess Club at the weekend at Hotel Africana.Aggressive play and some smart board order had the Sanlam Attackers cruising comfortably without any hiccups, beating UCU Queens 5-0 and Lweza 4.5-1.5.

Sanlam was inspired by the performances of Olympiads Harold Wanyama and Mathias Ssonko who beat UCU’s Shakira Ampeire and Esther Nakitende while Rajab Kamoga, Simon Gonza and Christine Namaganda beat Victoria Nakirya, Agnes Nabbaale and Esther Nannozi.

In the second round, FM Wanyama was held to a surprise draw by Lweza’s 2065-rated Micheal Mawanda who earlier shocked him with a defeat in the recent Olympiad Qualifiers.
