Rwenshama in shock URA win, KCC close in

KAMPALA

Newcomers Rwenshama waited up until their 11th Uganda Premier League (UPL) game to register their first victory, a 3-2 win over four-time champions URA at Ssaza Grounds in Mityana yesterday.
But whether they planned it to be after the departure of their erstwhile coach Shafiq Bisaso we shall never know. Having thrown in the towel this week citing months of unpaid salary, the ex Rwenshama coach will probably not have enjoyed his former bottom side picking their first victory a day after he resigned.
Despite staying bottom of the 16-team log with just five points, no one will begrudge the team that qualified from the Western Region before being bought off by Kampala Junior Team and moved to Mityana as their home ground.
Julius Malingumu added to his brace against Vipers last week another two goals against the tax collectors yesterday before Geoffrey Ssimbwa completed the remarkable victory. Frank Kalanda’s strike and Emmanuel Ngama’s second half penalty were a little too late for URA as coach Alex Isabirye’s side succumbed to their second defeat in 11 games. They remain sixth with 17 points.
At Lugogo, Hakim Ssenkumba, Brian Majwega and Derrick Nsibambi struck first half goals to hand KCC a 3-0 victory over Bul. Victory moved the defending champions second and to within two points of leaders Vipers, who are on 26.
The home side dominated proceedings and should have won by a bigger margin but for poor application in front of goal. But they will have cared less as the result was enough to hand coach Abdallah Mubiru his first victory in two games. “I had to switch tactics because of a poor pitch,” said Mubiru, adding, “So we resorted to playing the long ball.”
His Bul counterpart Kefa Kisala blamed his shaky defence.
