Regional Varsity Game Dates Set

About 6000 athletes from 12 countries will between 17th and 21st December 2014 camp at Uganda Christian University (UCU) Mukono to take part in 17 sporting disciplines during the 9th East African University Games.

“I thank the Eastern Africa University Sports Federation for awarding these games to UCU. This is indeed a sign of confidence bestowed upon us” His Grace Stanley Ntagali, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda and Chancellor of Uganda Christian University said in a statement.

The athletes are expected to come from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, Sudan, Eritrea, Somalia, Ethiopia, Comoros and Seychelles.

They will compete in the disciplines of Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Chess, Darts, Handball, Hockey, Karate, Rugby, Scrabble, Soccer, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Volleyball and Woodball.

“We are looking for close to Ushs1.2bn in preparation of the games’ village, facilities, and all the nit gritty necessary”, President of the local organizing committee, Anny Katabaazi told journalists.

This year’s games, under the theme spectacle and grandeur of the Eastern African Spirit, are code named, ‘Sports Pamoja’, a swahili word for togetherness.
