Prince Nakibinge Gets Phd

Prince Kassim Nakibinge Kakungulu, considered the titular head of the Muslim community in Uganda, has got an honorary doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Lahore in Pakistan.

The award of the PhD at Kibuli Muslim hospital last Friday coincided with the launch of the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU)’s medical school at its Kampala campus, with Kibuli hospital becoming IUIU’s teaching facility.

“According to [the World Health Organisation] WHO, 25 per cent of the world’s disease burden is in Africa, [but] the continent has only three per cent of the world’s medical workers. We feel that we have a duty as a university to contribute to the growth of human capital in Africa,” IUIU Rector Dr Ahmed Ssengendo said.

IUIU’s Habib Medical School was established in partnership with the University of Lahore and a philanthropist Saudi Arabian family, the Habib family. Nakibinge dedicated the PhD to his forefathers who laid the foundation for Islam in Uganda, and to the fractured Ugandan Muslim community, which, despite its problems, still accords him support and respect.

“In Uganda and other developing countries, the doctor-to-patient ratio is alarming, and the commissioning of this medical school will [enable IUIU] to add value to the provision of medical services not only in Uganda but Africa,” Nakibinge said.
