Three people died on Tuesday after they were hit by stray bullets fired by two policemen who were pursuing a suspected thief at Apurikida village, Minakulu Sub-county, Oyam District.
The deceased identified as Simon Obote, a boda-boda cyclist, and Denis Ogwang, a farmer, died on spot. The third person identified as Geoffrey Odongo Oyita, a farmer, died as he was being rushed to St Mary’s Hospital Lacor in Gulu District.
According to eye witnesses, the two policemen were pursuing a suspected thief who had reportedly stolen four goats.
The police spokesperson for Kyoga region, Mr Manshur Suwed, confirmed the 5pm incident. “The incident happened while our personnel fired to stop a suspect who was escaping police arrest.
Unfortunately, the bullet strayed and hit innocent people who were nearby,” Mr Suwed said.
“We have detained the officers at Minakulu Police Post, as we carry out investigations,” he added.
Mr Suwed noted that the two police officers acted unprofessionally by firing at a suspect in a crowded place, adding that they have opened a case of murder against the duo.
By press time, the bodies of the deceased were still at Minakulu Health Centre III awaiting postmortem.
