Democratic Party president Norbert Mao was yesterday said to be recovering at Nairobi Hospital where he was rushed for further treatment, family sources revealed.
Mr Mao was flown from Lacor hospital in Gulu District to Nairobi last weekend, Mr Mathias Nsubuga, DP secretary general told journalists at the party’s weekly media briefing in Kampala yesterday. He said Mr Mao was referred to Kenya’s Nairobi after coming down with malaria and abdominal pain.
“At first, the president was admitted in Gulu Independent Hospital with simple malaria and he was discharged. But after one day, his condition worsened and he was transferred to Lacor Hospital before being referred to Nairobi for better medical check-up,” Mr Nsubuga said. He said he had spoken to Mr Mao’s wife, Naome, on Tuesday morning over the phone. Ms Mao, he said, indicated that her husband is recovering and will be discharged soon.
The DP leader fell sick shortly after he arrived in northern Uganda during the ongoing campaign for free and fair elections. He was also in the region as part of an ongoing parallel process to prepare him for the 2016 general elections.
The Publicity Secretary of Uganda Peoples Congress Party, Mr Okello Lucima, last evening told Daily Monitor that they were together in Gulu when Mr Mao felt sick.
However, the Executive Director of the government’s Media Centre, Mr Ofwono Opondo, said government is not aware about Mr Mao’s sickness. “If they inform us, asking for help we can intervene as government but as per now, we shall wait until we get the information otherwise we are not aware,” Mr Opondo said.
