Kampala. Police have vowed to block an opposition rally scheduled for today in Katwe where various opposition politicians will call upon supporters to boycott the upcoming mayoral elections.
Opposition politicians on Monday led by former FDC leader Kizza Besigye vowed to use any means possible to “stop an illegality from taking place” if the Electoral Commission (EC) and government organise a by-election for Kampala lord mayoral seat.
The politicians had, through Lubaga South Member of Parliament Moses Kasibante, written to police, informing them of their intention to hold the rally in his constituency.
According to the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Ibin Ssenkumbi, the politicians did not follow the procedures as set down by the Public Order Management Act, where they have to inform police three days before and attach a consent letter from the owner of the place where the rally is to be held.
olice response“This rally is not allowed because it is illegal. We received the letter on Monday evening contrary to the law. They neither attached a consent letter from the owner of the ground for the rally nor the estimated number of attendees,” Mr Ssenkumbi said.
olice have asked Mr Kasibante to rework the letter and follow proper procedures before holding a rally. The politicians are scheduled to hold two rallies in Katwe today and another on Sunday at Wankuluku to mobilise against the by-election.
