The NRM national youth vice chairperson for the northern region was on Friday detained at Lira Central Police Station for allegedly inciting the public against the political leaders and the government.
Mr Willy Omodo-Omodo was summoned to the station where he was detained for hours before being released on police bond. While Mr Omodo told the Daily Monitor that he was not told as to why he had been detained, the North Kyoga Region police commander, Mr Richard Aruk Maruk, said the youth leader was arrested for making utterances on radio that were inciting the public against political leaders and the government.
“As chairperson NRM youth northern, he has gone as far as using the same office to harass others,” Mr Aruk told the Daily Monitor on phone at the weekend. He said Mr Omodo will be charged with defamation, character assassination and abuse of office.
Mr Aruk said Omodo would appear in court on Monday. He also denied allegations that Mr Omodo is being politically victimised. “Whether he supports President Museveni or Amama Mbabazi is none of my business, mine is crime,” Mr Aruk said.
He said his duty was to arrest Mr Omodo and transfer him to Kampala where he committed the crime. On March 3, Mr Omodo was arrested together with two other youth leaders for allegedly soliciting signatures from NRM members pushing to hold a delegates’ conference to reportedly back Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi to stand as the NRM flag bearer come 2016. They were released the same day on police bond.
