Norbert Mao ‘In Stable Condition’

After days of speculation, the Democratic Party and family of Norbert Mao clarified yesterday that the DP boss was in a stable condition at Nairobi hospital.

Kampala was yesterday awash with speculation on social media that Mao, a former Gulu municipality MP and losing presidential candidate in the 2011 general election, had passed on. Some anxious readers called The Observer to check if the information was accurate. But speaking at a lunchtime news conference at Parliament, family and party members refuted the death reports.

They said Mao was making “positive response to treatment”.

The conference was addressed by DP Secretary General and Bukoto South MP Mathias Nsubuga East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) member Dan Kidega, a brother to Mao and DP member Kato Lubwama. Mao has been in Nairobi hospital since Friday.

Kidega thanked the UPDF and government for assisting Mao and denied tabloid allegations linking Mao’s illness to poisoning.

“As a family, we want to thank the UPDF and government for the kind of support they have extended to Mao because he was airlifted from Gulu to Kampala to catch the flight to Nairobi,” Kidega said. “I would like to put it categorically that he is being treated for pneumonia and there is no doctor, either from Lacor hospital or Nairobi, who says that he was poisoned.”

Nsubuga said he had spoken to Mao on phone for about 20 minutes on Wednesday, and to his wife yesterday morning.
