Nkumba defy odds to join Ndejje in Carthage for African meet

As soon as Nkumba University defeated Ndejje Elites 3-2 to win the National Club Championship last year, they earned a ticket to play at the women Africa Club Championship this year. But Nkumba looked like they would opt out of the African meet due to financial constraints. However the three-time National League winners will, after all, be in Carthage, Tunisia after an 11th hour intervention from their own institution that was supplemented by Bank of Uganda.

“We had high hopes of travelling since we earned our berth until early this week when things looked bleak,” disclosed coach Tonny Lakony. “But we have to thank our board of trustees that passed our budget of $32,000 (Shs80m).”

Nkumba captain Eunice Amuron and center blocker Faridah Namajja traveled with fellow Ugandan representatives Ndejje Elites yesterday. The rest of the 11 members of the Nkumba contingent leave this morning.
