President Museveni is set to return to Kanungu, the home district of former prime minister-turned-political rival Amama Mbabazi.
The president is due to preside during celebrations to mark 100 years since the introduction of Christianity in the district. The week-long activities, from May 4 to May 10 are organized by the diocese of Kinkiizi, which is also marking its 20th anniversary.
“The Church has championed holistic human growth, made sure the message addresses the entire person through founding [of] educational and vocational institutions, health centres, as well as addressing other socio-economic issues ranging from provision of clean and safe water,” said Rev Justus Tibesigwa, the diocesan secretary.
The diocese was carved from North Kigezi diocese of the Anglican Church on May 7, 1995.
“This is an opportunity for the diocese to do self-examination of how the Christian faith has impacted our communities in Kinkiizi, Kanungu district and the entire region of Kigezi. This is an event of religious importance and pride to the diocese,” Tibesigwa said.
