Museveni, Besigye to meet at wedding


President Museveni and former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) president Kizza Besigye are expected in Kasese today for the royal wedding of Prince Christopher Kibanzanga, the young brother of Rwenzururu King Charles Wesley Mumbere.

The Rwenzururu chief prince, who is also the kingdom’s special envoy to Kyatenga region in DR Congo, is to wed Ms Jacklyn Muhindo Sausi. The former Busongora South MP and Ms Muhindo are to wed at St Paul’s Cathedral Kamaiba in Kasese Town.

Mr David Kabau, the chairman of the organising committee for the royal wedding, said President Museveni is expected to be the chief guest.

Prince Kibanzanga is a member of the opposition FDC party, a party founded by Mr Museveni’s fiercest opponent, Dr Besigye, who is also expected to attend the wedding ceremony.Mr Kabau said Shs100m had been budgeted for the wedding, which is expected to host 5,000 guests at Kilembe Mines Golf Club.

Asked whether Mr Museveni would attend the ceremony, Ms Linda Nabusayi, the President’s deputy Press Secretary, said. “I haven’t got the confirmation by now (Friday 10:30am),” Ms Nabusayi said.

The FDC former spokesperson, Mr Wafula Oguttu, confirmed Dr Besigye’s attendance. “Yes, he is supposed to attend. He was invited, although there is another meeting for inter-party [cooperation] at Mukono. But by yesterday (Thursday) he was ready to attend the royal wedding,” Oguttu said.

Prince Kibanzanga is highly respected in the kingdom and political circles. The couple has been living together for several years and have three children.
