Moroto stuck with unclaimed bodies

Moroto. Workers at Moroto Government Hospital have complained of a stench from decomposing unclaimed human bodies in the mortuary.

Ms Janet Nate, a cleaner at the hospital, said last week about eight unclaimed bodies are in the mortuary and the municipal council authorities have failed to dispose them of.

Mr Peter Okello Odeke, the hospital principal administrator, confirmed the hospital mortuary had unclaimed bodies, but only lamented without offering a solution.

He said the hospital has no burial ground. He said many patients die at the hospital but their bodies are not claimed by their relatives.

“People should not shy away from bodies of their relatives but they should make sure they take them and bury them,” he said.“The municipal council doesn’t have any available burial ground and this is the major challenge,” he said.

Mr Muzamin Akuma, the Town Clerk Moroto, and the mayor Mr Alex Lemu confirmed the municipality has no burial ground. They said they were in discussion with the community to identify a space for a public burial ground.

“We are discussing with the community to sell some part of the nearby land to the municipal so that it can be used as a cemetery,” Mr Akuma said.
