Makerere partners with German drug company


Makerere University yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding with Merck, a Germany pharmaceutical and chemical company, to collaborate in research, improve and expand access to health care in the country.

Makerere University Deputy Vice Chancellor Okello Ogwang said the partnership will facilitate the establishment of scientific collaborations in diseases such as malaria, schistosomiasis, helminthic, diarrhoea which more prevalent in the Sub-Saharan Africa.

The amount of money involved in the partnership was not made public.Mr Kai Beckmann, the Merck executive board member, said the company will extend the partnership to the Ministry of Health and the Uganda Diabetes Association.

“This is part of our commitment to aancing healthcare capacity and providing sustainable access to high-quality health solutions in Africa,” Mr Beckmann said.
