Madness Rules At Maurice Kirya Weeklong Birthday

Last week was a busy one at The Sound Cup.

The Garden City-based cafeacute marked one year on November 2, as its proprietor, singer Maurice Kirya, added another year to his own life two days later. The two events coincided with Kirya’s monthly first-Thursday gig.

Myko Ouma, one of this generation’s finest guitarists, was picked to perform at the live show. Judging by the number of revellers who started arriving way earlier than the scheduled 8pm start, they could not have picked a better performer for the night.

He stepped on the stage a little after 8pm, kicking off the night’s action with Ten, off his upcoming second album. He then played Aluru, one of his fans’ favourite songs. This was enough to fire up the crowd and get revellers on their feet with those lucky enough to find seats only taking breaks to sip their chai or take a bite off their rolex (one of the cafeacute’s specialties).

Those standing had no reason to look forlorn they just grooved all the way. Ouma then performed Neptune and Flashback, off the album set for release next year. He switched the guitar for the thumb piano to play Home-Made, producing that authentic sound that only the thumb piano can.

He turned the session another notch higher with covers of popular songs such as Magnetic (Radio and Weasel), Personally (P-Square) and Khona (Mafikizolo). His version of Davido’s Aye ended the ‘madness’ session. Madness, because the whole of Garden City’s third floor had become one big party of screaming and dancing party people.

Allan Okia and Sam Bisaso backed Ouma with bass guitars plus a saxophonist and percussionist, providing an unforgettable live performance.
