Independent presidential candidate Joseph Mabirizi has for the second time skipped campaign rallies scheduled in Masaka and Kalangala districts over unknown reasons.
According to the Electoral Commission campaign programme, Mr Mabirizi was supposed to campaign in the two districts at the weekend but did not show up-leaving his supporters baffled.
Ms Christine Ntambi, a resident of Nyendo, a Masaka Town suburb, who says she enjoys listening to all presidential candidates’ campaign speeches, said she was disappointed when she waited for Mr Mabirizi in vain.
“We were anxiously waiting for him but he disappointed us and there is no indication that he is coming because we have not heard or seen the mobile public address systems that are used to mobilise people to go for rallies,” she said.
Mr Yasin Mukalazi, a computer technician in Masaka Town, also said he was upset by Mr Mabirizi’s decision to skip the Masaka rally because he thought he would talk about problems that are affecting them. “Personally, I was interested in his coming to Masaka because I wanted him to tell us what he will do when he gets to power and his plans about the high taxes levied on reconditioned electronics such us computers and used cars,” he said.
Efforts to get a comment from Mr Mabrizi did not yield results as he could not be reached on his known telephone. However, his spokesperson Ronald Ngozi said Mr Mabirizi had two urgent programmes to attend to in Kampala on both days but he will be back on the campaign trail today (Tuesday).
“We are sorry that we did not inform our supporters about the change in our programme, but on Sunday, we were in church and today (Monday) he (Mabirizi) has been meeting some of his campaigning managers in Makerere,” he added.
Mabirizi is expected to hold campaigns in Sembabule District on Tuesday and later connect to Bukomansimbi District on Wednesday.
