Lwengo authorities ban sports betting

Lwengo-The authorities in Lwengo District have abolished sports betting.Speaking to the Daily Monitor on Monday, the Lwengo District chairman, Mr George Mutabazi, said sports betting had led to a rise in crime.

He said some youth groups have resorted to robbery to get money for gambling in sports betting centres.

“In my district I don’t want to see anyone betting because such practices have led to high cases of theft, house breaking and robbery in the district,’’ Mr Mutabazi said.

He added that he had instructed police to arrest people found engaging in sports betting. Lwengo District chairman said many youth in the district are jobless and he wondered where they get the money which they use daily in sports betting.

“Where do they get the money which they foolishly misuse on sports betting and drinking alcohol?’’ he asked.

In the budget for 201415 government has introduced a 15 per cent tax on all money won in sports betting.
