Leah Kalanguka Off for Miss World

After getting crowned Miss Uganda 201415 last month, Leah Kalanguka is ready to represent Uganda at the Miss World pageant in London.

She is expected in London to join 130 other contestants from across the globe competing for the crown. The grand finale is scheduled for December 14, 2014.

To flag her off, Miss Uganda’s surprise main sponsors, Namukekera Rural Industrial Centre (NRIC) and Mirinda, organized a send-off ceremony for her at the Youth Innovation and Export market in Namulanda on Entebbe road.

Speaking at the colourful event, the minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Maria Kiwanuka, who was the guest of honour, praised this year’s beauty contest theme for being in line with encouraging youths to take up farming, which she observed was a timely venture.

“Miss Uganda is a special position,” she said. “This year’s pageant was timely and government is supporting youths who want to take part in agriculture.”

The chairman, NRIC, Gen Caleb Akandwanaho aka Salim Saleh, defended their choice to sponsor the beauty contest, describing it as “the best investment we could do in 2014.”

Kalanguka was handed a Ugandan flag and jacket, which Akandwanaho had bought for her to help her cope-up with the cold in London. Unfortunately, the jacket was too big, forcing the general to apologise for the fact that he didn’t know the beauty queen was that small.

A group of vendors at the market prayed for Kalanguka before the event ended. Earlier on, Saava Karim had performed for the guests, bringing them to their feet.
