Lady Cranes must be agile in CAR 7s

The Lady Rugby Cranes will need some speedy legs to make any impact at the CAR 7s tournament kicking off this morning in Machakos, Kenya.

The sevens game calls for agility and high fitness levels and Ugandan captain Helen Buteme believes her team is in shape for the challenge. “The girls have been hitting the gym and they all look to be in good shape,” Buteme said on phone from Brookhouse International School, Nairobi where the side is camping. “It’s a bit hot down here which requires us not to tire out easily especially during the afternoon games,” she added. The Lady Cranes are placed in Pool B with Tunisia, Namibia and Zimbabwe.

The Ugandan side will, however, miss the services of experienced utility back Charlotte Mudoola who has been kept out of the one-day tourney by work commitments. Following a 12-7 triumph over Senegal in a build-up encounter, Uganda are beaming high on confidence.

“The warm-up game has lifted the spirits in the camp and we are all positive,” noted Buteme.

Back home, Kyadondo will today witness the crowning of two different champions.

The Protector Super Series and Schools finals are both lined up this evening. Kololo SS will be hoping to smother defending champions Hana Mixed and bag their maiden schools title.

That game, in which veteran Robert Seguya, is involved as Hana coach Hana, will curtain rise for the Protector Super Series final. In that clash, Seguya will line up for Protectors as they fight for the prize against Cros.

“This is something that happens once in a lifetime, it’s a bit tricky but I definitely want to be a double champion at the end of the day,” said the 35- year-old Seguya. Protectors beat Crocs 22-13 in the second round of the tournament.
