University Football League (UFL) defending champions, Kampala University (KU) will today open their title defence against Makerere University. Coach Vincent Tumusiime’s team – which clinched the title following a 4-1 victory over Mbarara University of Science and Technology (Must) on the final day of last season – will then take on Uganda Martyrs Nkozi next week.
Makerere will be looking to improve after last season’s campaign where they won six matches out of 14. However Makerere’s new coach Deo Bamweyana expects a tough game against the champions but he is positive they will bag the maximum points.
“Kampala University should know that they are coming to play and leaving the points here. The team is now rejuvenated and focused,” he said. In their previous two encounters, KU walloped Makerere 3-0 in the first round before edging them 1-0 in the second round.
On the other hand though, KU will field a new-look side after key players Peter Otai and Matthew Odong, crossed over to Victoria University. “We expect a good game and my players know that we will play every team with the sole aim of retaining the trophy we won last year,” Tumusiime told Daily Monitor yesterday.
