Kipsiro recalled to defend Commonwealth titles

Moses Kipsiro has been named in the final team to represent Uganda at next month’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. The 28-year-old long distance runner had been dropped from the initial team and was expected to miss the Games at which he won a 5,000m10,000m double in New Delhi, India four years ago.

Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF), however, softened their stance on the former World Championships 5,000m bronze medallist and included him in the 18-man squad. It is understood that Kipsiro had been dropped after he spoke to the media about the sexual harassment that has dogged the sport since March.

After he blamed UAF for refusing to punish coach Peter Wemali, who was accused by female junior runners of sexually harassing them ahead of the March 16 Africa Cross-country, Kipsiro was dropped from the team that competed at the World Half Marathon Championships in Denmark on March 29. He has since been in the cold and his participation in the Commonwealth Games remains unclear since his biometrics were not captured for visa purposes like the rest of his teammates.

Asked about the change in their decision, UAF technical head Faustino Kiwa declined to comment saying “Aaah…you remove me from your Monitor things,” in an angry tone, he said before instantly hanging up.
