KICC make maiden T20 quarterfinals

Kampala Institute of Cricket Clubs (KICC) reached the quarterfinals of the National Twenty20 League after a four-wicket win over Rounders and a Super Over victory over 2012 winners Tornado. The results ensured KICC finished their Group B ties with 20 points.

“We wanted to two wins today, got them and victory over Tornado inspires us to even look at the bigger prize,” KICC captain Hanumant Katkar told Daily Monitor. KICC’s progress to the last eight is the first since the tournament’s inception back in 2011.

In the morning, Katkar’s decision to field first was well backed up by left-arm spinner Irfan Afridi who took figures of 316 to restrict Rounders to 103 for 8 at Kyambogo Oval. Rounders’ Zulu Walaza made 24 off 27.

In reply, KICC’s John Tumusiime made 26 off 33 to help seal off the victory in the final over. Again against Tornado at Lugogo, Afridi and Suleman Sharif shared six wickets for 13 runs as Tornado were bundled out for 38 in 11.2 overs.

Tornado skipper Frank Nsubuga and Timothy Kayigwa shared six scalps for 11 runs as KICC were bowled out for the same scoreline in 13 overs to force a rare Super Over.

Elsewhere, Challengers’ opening batsman Arthur Kyobe moved top of the batting chart with 247 runs after his 64-ball 65 half-ton helped his side to a seven-wicket win over Rounders.
