Jinja Resident Judge Godfrey Namondi says that up to 800 cases in his area remain unresolved largely due to lack of judges. Speaking at the launch of the “small claims procedure” last week, Namondi said out of 50 judicial officers needed to handle the cases, there were only 20.
Under the small claims system, lawyers will not be needed to represent litigants in suits worth Shs 10m or less. It is expected the system will help reduce the case backlog. The function was presided over by Principal Judge Yorokamu Bamwine, who vowed to punish any judicial officer nabbed soliciting money from court users.
