IUIU students start commercial food production

MBALE. Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) Faculty of Foods and Nutrition students have started an association for commercial production of packed food and juice.
The IUIU Food and Nutrition association aims at producing juice from different fruits and foods such as baked dishes.
Ms Hadijah Babirye, the chairperson IUIU Food and Nutrition association said her department has been producing the products for free consumption but given their quality, they have decided to commercialise the project for income generation.
“We have realised that we can produce a lot of foods and juices for the market out there. Our products are liked by many and everyone who has had a taste has urged us to commercialise the production for income generation for the faculty,” said Ms Babirye.
She said the faculty shall produce at least 70 litres of juice per week from different fruits which will be marketed in Bugisu and Teso sub-regions.
Mr Davis Katenya, a fourth year Food science and nutrition student said they started the project as an experiment of their practical lessons.
