Involve Army in Research, Says Prof Kwesiga

The executive director of the Uganda Industrial Research Institute (UIRI), Prof Charles Kwesiga, has recommended that the armed forces be involved in research and innovation.

Prof Kwesiga’s call came following a meeting with a delegation of the Nigerian Defence Forces at UIRI recently. He explained the potential of getting the army involved in food production, with the use of technological innovations. Kwesiga added that it was also important for the army to train soldiers to acquire vocational skills that would serve them well in retirement.

The Nigerian delegation, led by Brig Oyebade, said the visit had opened up their minds on the potential role of the military in their country’s industrialisation.

The visit happened on the sidelines of the World Association of Industrial Technology Research Organisations (WAITRO) networking conference at UIRI. The conference brought together 74 technology researchers from across the world. WAITRO is a not-for-profit association, currently headed by Prof Kwesiga.
