BUGIRI- The newly-elected Bugiri District chairperson, Mr Siraje Lyavala, has said he is being attacked and harassed by some people in the district, especially the youth.
Speaking at the district headquarters on Tuesday while announcing the new district executive committee, Mr Lyavala said he is heckled when he attends community functions such as funerals.
“Whenever I go out to attend functions and burial ceremonies, groups of youth always follow me while abusing me and shut me down whenever I try to address the public,” he complained.
Mr Lyavala of the ruling NRM party, was declared winner of the March 18 Bugiri LC5 by-election with a difference of 167 votes.
He garnered 27,364 votes, while his main challenger, Mr Bumali Luba of the Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party got 27,197 votes, followed by Mr Mohamed Walangalira (Independent) with 879 votes, Mr Abdu Nakendo, (Independent) garnered 867 votes and Mr Simon Funa (Independent) got 861 votes.
However, the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Mr Wafula Oguttu, contested the outcome on grounds that there was vote rigging, intimidation and unnecessary arrests of the FDC leaders and supporters.
Sections of the FDC supporters vowed never to recognise Mr Lyavala as the LC5 Chairman. However, Mr Lyavala blames the alleged harassment on divisions among supporters of NRM and called on police to intervene.
“I want to request the police to intervene in the matters because such acts are sabotaging the government programmes in the district,” he said.
During the meeting, Mr Lyavala named Mr Moses Kaziba as vice chairman Ms Grace Nalwende as secretary for finance Mr Lawrence Byansi as secretary for production and Mr Yusuf Musa Namadowa as secretary for education and health.
