Jinja people are known to be party animals and they don’t shy away from that categorisation.
In fact, driving through their town on a Saturday, one is welcomed with the numerous Easter gigs already going down, with the recent street jam taking centre stage. With such hyper excitement, it was left to see how they would respond to the Heineken Foosball challenge that had taken the search to the East over the weekend.
Bax Bar and Lounge along Clive Road West was the venue. The place was well-decorated and smart ushers offered arriving patrons drinks. DJ Apeman, whose catch phrase, “Your girlfriend’s favourite DJ” has made him a darling on social media, was the man tasked with entertainment and he did a great job video-mixing for the excited crowd.
They kept dancing even when the heavens opened up in the wee hours of the morning it turned into a request session with Apeman playing only songs the crowd wanted and his collection is quite good, because he had almost every song he was asked to play.
As the rest of the crowd sipped away on their drinks, it was fierce competition with foosball. In the end Rogers Musinguzi and, Eden Junda of Rocat team emerged winners who will represent Jinja in the finals to be held at Legends Sports bar on May 3.
The search goes to Mbarara’s Heat bar over the Easter weekend. Mbarara produced the winners last year with Patrick Muhanguzi and Titus Nuwamanya winning an all-expenses-paid trip to Amsterdam for a week. For the second year running, the tournament has drawn a wide participation from Heineken and football lovers across the East African region.
In playing foosball, Heineken consumers are challenged to demonstrate their table-football skills and win exclusive merchandise. Foosball has caught on and this year’s edition has seen participation from Kampala, Jinja, Entebbe and Gulu.
Heineken will fly the ultimate foosball champions to the island of Ibiza in Spain to experience the live screening of the UEFA Champions League finals. In a new addition from Heineken, the owner of the outlet from which the winning foosball team emerges will accompany his two customers for the tour experience.
“We couldn’t think of a better way of having our customers enjoy the ultimate UEFA Champions League experience,” Koen Morshuis Heineken East Africa general manager, told The Observer.
