Gulu Municipal authorities have threatened to evict people in Limo, Awere, Kony Paco and Hoy Rosary wards, all in Laroo Division, over their failure to construct pit-latrines.
Gulu mayor George Labeja at the weekend said most of those without pit-latrines are former internally displaced persons (IDP) who settled in the area at the peak of the Lord’s Resistance Army insurgency.
“We have asked them to return to their original homes but they have refused yet they even do not have pit-latrines. They are littering the place with human waste,” he said.
He expressed concern that water sources could be contaminated by faecal matter and diseases such as typhoid and cholera could break out.
“In the survey that was conducted by the municipal and division official mid-last year, we found out that there are very many people residing in these congested areas without latrines,” Mr Labeja said.
He added that the IDPs were temporarily resettled in the affected areas because of the war, but have since refused to go back to their villages.
The Laroo Division chairperson, Mr Moses Abonga, said an inspection team will soon be deployed in the area and forcibly evict those without pit-latrines.
