Gulu locals use fires for revenge

Fires have destroyed properties and lives in Gulu District, causing concern among locals and leaders. Majority of the fires are started as revenge acts especially in land conflicts, mysterious deaths and domestic violence. According to police, eight of every 10 fires are a result of revenge.The Regional police spokesperson for Aswa region, Mr Jimmy Patrick Okema, said recently locals have adopted arson as a weapon to settle their grudges. “Most cases received here are fires that have been carried out as a result of revenge for murder, domestic violence and tribal clashes,” he said.He, however, noted that other fires are caused by children, hunters and farmers intentionally or negligently during the dry seasons adding that most victims are widows.
