Makerere University travels across the city tomorrow to face Mubs in an intriguing Nile Special University Football League tie.
Although it is only the seventh game of the season, the encounter will be a crucial one for both sides as it could define either side’s season following the adoption of a ‘Champions League’ format by the competition.
Both sides will be looking for a win to ensure a Top 2 finish in Group A that would see them play the third or fourth placed teams in Group B in the quarterfinals. In the two teams’ last meeting last season, Makerere University walloped Mubs 3-0 at Nakawa on the last day of the season. The game had no bearing on either side’s final position.
Earlier in the season, Mubs beat Makerere 2-0 at the Makerere grounds. Both sides are evenly-balanced with Mubs holding a slight aantage of having already watched Makerere in action. “We watched their game against Kampala University and know their g points and weak points,” says Mubs coach Charles Ayiekoh. “They have a good goal keeper and sharp strikers who we shall need to watch carefully,” he adds.
Mubs will be boosted by the return of goalkeeper Fred Ovoya, who has mended fences with Ayiekoh. On the other hand, Makerere will look to goalie Moses Otema and striker Gerald Obong to help them carry the day.
“We are going to Mubs with the intention of winning the game. Mubs are a g team and will be boosted by home aantage but if we keep calm and play our game, I’m sure we will win,” says Deogratius Bamweyana, Makerere University coach.
