The Queen Of The Pack, Patra, was in town over the weekend performing at the Club Mega Fest at Mandela Stadium, Namboole.
The 1990s dancehall icon is not only popular for her sensual ‘riddims’ and dance moves but also for her sense of style. Her trademark look of long braids and short shorts is known world over. The long braids and cropped boyfriend denim shorts (daisy dukes) became known as the Patra braids and pum pum shorts back then.
But in Uganda the shorts, especially the denim ones are known as Patra up to now. Patra may have taken a break from music, but the short shorts did not. They are a mainstay in dancehall music videos and many women have owned a pair. The night animals still see them on the dance floor ranging from high waist to low cut, to the extremely shredded and some that are short enough to be called under wear.
So when they heard that the queen herself was in town, they brought the patras out in broad daylight. The darker it got the shorter they got. By the time Patra came on stage the pum pum ladies were at the forefront shaking what their mamas gave them. Unfortunately, she did not rock the stage wearing one of her legendary shorts.
No doubt the 43-year-old would have pulled it off, if the way she looked in the see through spandex cat suit by Butch Diva were anything to go by. The ‘patra’ is timeless and here to stay. Thank you, Patra, for making our nights out memorable.
