Ex-Minister Wambuzi Jailed

The former junior minister for Trade, Nelson Gagawala Wambuzi, has been sent to Kirinya prison for failing to pay Shs 189m in costs for his failed election petition.

In 2011, Wambuzi petitioned the High court in Jinja, accusing the Electoral Commission and area MP Kenneth Lubogo of illegally consigning him to defeat.

He polled 21,898 votes against Lubogo’s 23,136. He lost the court battles and incurred heavy costs, which he has not yet paid.

He was committed to six months by Jinja Magistrate Suzan Kanyange until he pays the money. When contacted, Wambuzi said he planned to pay the debt.
