Dr Kiyingi Sues Newspapers Over Wife

Australia-based Ugandan cardiologist Aggrey Kiyingi has sued Hello and Kamunye newspapers, accusing them of publishing defamatory statements against him and his wife.

In a suit filed at the High court on October 30, Kiyingi says one of the offending articles claimed that he had fallen out with his wife, Mayimuna Nakayiira Kiyingi, a musician. The story said Nakayiira defied Kiyingi’s order to stop singing, leading to a row.

Kiyingi says this portrayed him as “uncivilised, egocentric, malicious and is not supporting his wife’s music career,” yet he has no career-related disagreement with his wife.

Kiyingi wants a permanent injunction restraining the Pepper Publications and editors of Hello from further publication of libelous material against him. He also wants damages amounting to Shs 25m, with a 35 per cent interest per annum.

Kiyingi married Nakayiira in 2009 at a private ceremony in Nairobi, Kenya. His wedding came four years after the grisly murder of his first wife, Robinah, at their Buziga residence. Kiyingi was prosecuted for the murder but was found innocent.
