DP leaders clash over elections

Democratic Party (DP) youth leaders in Kalangala District have accused their district chairperson , Mr James Matovu, of conspiring with some members of his executive to block party members from participating in the party primaries.

The youth led by Mr Richard Kityo claim that since the party announced a programme to elect new leaders right from the grassroots, there has been a deliberate plot by the district party leaders to block the elections.

“The national organising committee of the DP has neither stopped nor extended the exercise. Why is it that in Kalangala District party leaders are not announcing a clear programme for us to follow ?” Mr Kityo asked.

The issues were raised at the weekend when party officials were organising their voters’ register.

A fortnight ago, the DP launched a drive to elect grassroot leaders so as to strengthen the party ahead of the 2016 general elections
When contacted, Mr Matovu denied the allegations saying: “We understand there are people, who want us to leave power, but we are eligible to contest again and if we lose through a popular vote, we will honourably relinquish office for the next leader to take the mantle.” he said.
