Crisis meeting as Ebola death toll increases in West Africa

PARLIAMENT- Traditional leaders under their umbrella body, Uganda Neddagala Nobuwangwa Bwaffe Association, want Parliament to enact a law to regulate their activities in the country.

While appearing before Parliament’s Gender committee yesterday, the association’s leader, Ms Sylvia Namutebi a.k.a Mama Fina, told MPs the current Witchcraft Act lumps them together with witches, yet their work is different in nature.
“The cases of child sacrifice have been tagged to traditional healers on several occasions but our practice does not allow us to spill human blood but animal sacrifice. Many people are duped by witches and the negative end results are blamed on us. So, we need a separate law to clarify these issues,” Ms Namutebi said.

She was responding to a petition by the chairperson of Parliamentary Forum for Children, Ms Florence Mutyabule (Namutumba Woman) and civil society activists in 2012 on anti-child sacrifice and ritual murder of children in Uganda.

The association’s Secretary General, Mr Sewaya Kiwanuka said: “We condemn child sacrifice. We have embarked on screening all our members and they will be published in a directory that will be availed to the public. We are also sensitising the public on what traditional healers engage in so they are not duped.”

However, MPs accused the traditional healers of encouraging their members to aertise misleading services on broadcast media and of extorting money from the unsuspecting public.
