The number of people killed now stands at 85 in Bundibugyo alone, according to Rwenzori region army spokesperson Lt Ninsiima Rwemijuma.
Last Saturday afternoon, a group of unidentified gunmen, wearing casual clothes, attacked Kicho police post and Bundibugyo police station and killed two policemen. Also over 50 civilians were killed. Another group attacked two security officers, guarding a weigh bridge in Kasese, killing one and left another in critical condition, taking their guns in the process.
Ten people were confirmed dead in Kasese, most of whom were residents of Bigando village of Kistwmaba sub-county. The dead were either Basongora or Batooro. Commander of Special Forces Group Muhoozi Kainerugaba and Police chief Kale Kayihura are reported to be in the area.
Some people link the attacks to Allied Democratic Forces (ADF ) whereas the army officer blame the incidents to tribal conflicts between the Bakonjo and Basongora in Kasese and the Bundibugyo attacks to conflicts between Bamba and Bakonjo. It is also reported that the army has declared a curfew in Bundibugyo town and told residents to stay ‘indoors’ although it is not clear when this applies.
