In light of the recent attack on a university college in Garissa, Kenya that claimed over 147 students, the chairman of Makerere University Convocation, Dr Tanga Odoi, has appealed to the public to support the association in erecting a perimeter wall around the university.
Dr Odoi made the call last week during the official introduction of the convocation’s new executive committee. The committee will serve until 2019, and has been in office for two weeks.
The lack of a perimeter wall around a university with over five outlets has been a very contentious issue for several years. The university once set aside funds for the construction of the wall in 2004. However, these funds were mismanaged, causing the constructed wall to collapse after a heavy downpour, before its completion.
The convocation also plans to tackle the issue of unemployment among former students.
“As an association, we plan on linking up with different government stakeholders as well as creating an alumni database to connect different former students to prospective jobs,” said Justus Nuwajuna, the Makerere University Convocation treasurer.
The Makerere University convocation is an aggregate association of alumni and current staff of Makerere University. The convocation brings together former students, since the institution’s establishment in 1922, and is the legal graduate body mandated to act on behalf of the university alumni.
