Boat Accident Kills 19

Ugandan police say at least 19 people, most of them children, have died in a boat accident on Lake Albert, which lies along the Uganda-Congo border.

Police said the boat was carrying 96 Congolese refugees when it capsized Saturday. At least 45 people were rescued and a search was continuing for 32 missing men, women and children.

Boat accidents are common on Ugandan lakes, as transport providers take aantage of lax policing to load their boats with more passengers than they can safely carry.

Police said the boat capsized Saturday because it was “overloaded” with passengers.
