It is not everyday that you get to challenge your manager and boss and end up beating him thoroughly.
Uganda’s number one tennis player, Duncan Mugabe, had that rare opportunity on Saturday evening when he tussled it out with Cedric Babu on centre court at the Lugogo Tennis Club. Mugabe is signed under Cedric Babu’s Kinetic Management Group (KMG).
The friendly battle was all about old school versus the new school. Babu’s all neon outfit and matching Nikes could not save him from a thrashing of 6-1, 6-1 at the hands of his proteacuteeacute.
But he proved that he still has moves and a deadly backhand. But it was more than just a tennis game it was an excuse to interact and have a cold beer on a Saturday evening.
Majority of the people in the VIP tent were at the tennis club for the first time, so the rules of following the game were simplified just cheers and clap whenever Babu scored a point.
Obviously the old school was well represented. If the same crowd that was at the event keeps turning up, then tennis will indeed rise again and Babu’s, who is also the president of Uganda Tennis Association, idea of hosting Saturday’s event will have born fruits. Packaging the events with a leisurely, swaggeriffic setuproduction is a sure way of capturing Kampala’s attention.
The success of basketball’s Friday Night Lights (FNL) could follow KMG to tennis.
