Aronda ordered to probe MP assault


Gunfire rocked Lira Town as Prison officers chased a murder suspect who jumped off a moving truck as prisoners were being taken to court.

Ronnie Engole, the prime suspect in the murder of a Lira commuter taxi driver, jumped off a moving prison truck on Thursday morning as it negotiated a corner near Akii Bua Stadium.

Prison officers fired several bullets as Engole took off and tried to grab a boda boda to escape on it.He was rearrested and beaten by the prison warders before being taken to Lira Police Station where a case of attempting to escape from lawful custody was opened against him. He was later taken to the Chief Magistrate’s Court for mention of the murder case against him and hastily taken back to prison.

Engole and his co-accused Hamza Odongo are facing the charge of murdering Denis Anyuru, a driver and resident of Kakoge ‘A’ in Ojwina Division in January. His body was found burnt in his vehicle at Okole swamp near Odokomit on Lira-Gulu highway.
