Apass, Sheebah Could Be This Year’s Teen Favourites [opinion]

This year’s edition of the teen’s music awards, Buzz Teeniez awards, is going to be hotter than ever.

The 2015 edition was launched last Saturday at St Peter’s SS Nsambya. The BTAs are aimed at giving teenagers the chance to honour their biggest achievers in television, music, DJs, movies, sports, radio, and more.

The nominees list released at the launch shows Apass, Mun *G and Sheebah Karungi leading the pack. New kid on the block, Apass has five nominations. This is his chance to beat Bebe Cool, Mowzey Radio and Weasel plus Mun*G to the most coveted award of best male artiste, come May 2, 2015 at Kati Kati.

Even Irene Ntale, one of last year’s biggest winners, has a good competitor in Sheebah, who took over 2014 with songs such as Go Down Low (featuring Pallaso), Ice Cream and Twesaana.

Other categories worth looking out for are Teeniez Dancehall, where Sheebah could beat Ziza Bafana, Apass, Natty Neithan and AK47. The title sponsors, Mountain Dew, have sunk Shs 100m into this year’s edition dubbed The Doro Edition. ‘Doro’ is Nigerian slang made popular by the hit song, Dorobucci.

A new gong for the winners was also unveiled at the event. Tracy Kakuru, the brand executive, said the awards are a connection to their target audience and they are a great platform for the youths and entertainment industry.

“We are proudly associated with these awards because they are acknowledged by the entertainment industry. Therefore, building on their year-on-year success, we believe they have once again proved to be one of the best award events in Uganda and the best platform to associate with,” she said.

Irene Ntale and NBS’ DJ Mark – also a nominee in the DJs category – graced the launch stage. The students clearly enjoyed Ntale’s performance, since they knew all of her songs but some proved too shy to fully interact and get jiggy with the Gyobeera singer.
