The Congo-based Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels have planned arson attacks on schools mainly in eastern and central Uganda, the police has said.
In a terror alert issued on Saturday, police chief Kale Kayihura urged school administrators and the general public to be vigilant and report any suspicious persons and activities in their vicinity to the nearest police unit.
Citing intelligence information pointing to the planned attacks, Kahiyura urged schools to urgently put in place precautionary measures. He directed school administrators to employ around-the-clock security guards.
“Secondly, there should be metal detectors, at all entrance points to detect possible intrusion of explosive materials e.g. bombs. Thirdly, security lights, alarms, etc, should, if they have not been placed along non-porous perimeter fences, be installed,” he said.
He also urged education institutions to implement basic standards for safety and security provided to them by the ministry of education. In June 1998, ADF rebels attacked the Uganda Technical College Kichwamba in Kabarole district, burnt the college down and killed more than 80 students and abducted others.
