Masaka. A 54-year-old father of six was on Thursday sentenced to life in prison for defiling and impreganating his 14-year-old daughter.
Geoffrey Rwishasha, who had spent three years on remand at Masaka Central Prison, was arrested in 2011 in Rakai District on allegations that he had defiled his 14-year-old daughter who was in Primary Five at the time. Prosecution led by David Baxter Bakibinga pinned Rwishasha before the Masaka High Court presided over by Justice Margaret Oumo Oguli.
Rwishasha, who committed the offence between January and March 2011, regularly had sexual intercourse with his biological daughter and impregnated her. She later gave birth to a baby girl, who is now three years.
Mr Bakibinga said Rwishasha’s act not only amounts to aggravated defilement but also involved incest and asked court to hand him a maximum sentence.
“The convict did not only violate the victim’s innocence but also abused her privacy,” he told court during the trial.
According to Bakibinga, the victim is suffering social trauma of dropping out of school and having a child with her own father.
Before the sentencing, the defence lawyer Gorreth Ayebale asked court to give Rwishasha a chance to speak. Rwishasha pleaded for leniency but the judge rejected his plea, saying he did not stop his habit even after the girl reported to her mother that her father had been abusing her sexually. The judge said even during the trial, Rwishasha was not remorseful and that his actions traumatised his other daughters. The judge observed the convict was dangerous and deserved to be taken out of the community in order to keep him away from young girls.
On the rise. Cases of defilement continue to increase across the country. Police say this has been assisted by parents and village leaders who fail to push such matters to courts of law in order for perpetrators to get deterrent sentences.
