16 injured in bus accident

The Electoral Commission (EC) has stopped politicians from campaigning for the Amuru Woman parliamentary seat, which is expected to be vacant following the appointment of the incumbent as the director of fragility, conflict and violence at the World Bank. District registrar, Mr Sam Olet said the campaigns for Ms Betty Bigombe’s post are illegal because Parliament had not declared the seat vacant. Those vying for the seat are Ms Jane Frances Okilli (NRM), Ms Concy Aciro (FDC), Ms Jane Okello (NRM) and Ms Elizabeth Alimadi Ociti (NRM). “Parliament has not yet made any official statement to the Electoral Commission, so that the seat is declared vacant. All campaign activities that are ongoing are against the electoral law of the country,” said Mr Olet.

Earlier, Amuru Resident District Commissioner, Mr James Nabinson Kidega had banned all political rallies arguing that they were disrupting farming activities among the communities.“Local farmers prefer to attend political campaigns instead of attending to their farmlands which is also their only source of livelihood,” said Mr Kidega.
